Purpose
& Overview
This seminar is intended as an introductory primer
in U.S. patent law for scientists, engineers and
managers involved in business and technology.
The seminar covers the fundamentals of how to
identify, and document an invention, search for
patents related to the invention, and apply for
a patent application. In particular, attendees
will become familiar with the types of patent
applications, the parts of a patent application,
how to read a patent publication and the prosecution
process for getting a patent application allowed
before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Attendees
will also learn the key aspects of working with
a patent attorney in seeking patent protection.

business and technology needing an intensive introduction
or review of patent law.
Instructor:
Robert A. Migliorini
Bob Migliorini
is an in-house intellectual property attorney
with Exxon Mobil Corporation. Bob counsel clients
in patent preparation, patent prosecution, patent
opinions and technology contracts. Prior to becoming
an IP attorney, Bob worked for 17-years for ExxonMobil
Chemical Co., Films Business, in a variety of
technical, operations and leadership positions.
He has 20-years of chemical industry experience
as an engineer in a variety of technology areas
related to thermoplastic compounding, extrusion,
orientation, and coating of fiber and films. He
is also an inventor or coinventor of 12 U.S. patents
related to the field of coextruded films. Bob
holds a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Tufts
University, a M.S. in Materials Science and Engineering
and a M.B.A. from Rochester Institute of Technology,
a J.D. from Quinnipiac University School of Law,
and a LL.M. in Intellectual Property Law from
Franklin Pierce Law Center. He is licensed to
practice law in various states and before the
U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
